Fenbendazole – A Medication for Parasites

What Is Fenbendazole?

Fenbendazole is a medicine used to treat a variety of parasites in dogs and cats and other animals. What is a parasite? A parasite is an organism that lives in or on an organism of another species. It benefits by deriving nutrients at the other’s expense. Fenbendazole has been shown to be effective and safe for the treatment of a wide variety of parasites. This broad spectrum medication comes in many formulations and should be given with food to increase absorption and to decrease the likelihood of discomfort in the GI tract.

Fenbendazole will take effect over time, often 1-2 days after the initial dose. For traditional treatment, these doses are often taken in stages with the initial round being three consecutive days, and then the additional round coming 2-3 weeks after. Should you miss a dose, treatment will most likely need to be repeated, or may not take full effect. It is important to note however that when you miss a dose, double dosing can bring potential unintended harm to your pet.

Alternative uses of fenbendazole have been discovered in recent years and may require different dosing instructions.

Although there are only a few known side effects, vomiting and diarrhea, the best way to maximize safety efforts is to discuss all medication your pets are currently on with your veterinarian before starting Fenbendazole. To preserve the potency of Fenbendazole, keep it in an airtight container and out of the direct sunlight.

So How Does Fenbendazole Work?

Fenbendazole binds to the beta- tubulin within the microtubules and inhibits further formation, causing a blockage in division between cells. The disruption, while incredibly potent, blocks the parasitic abilities to generate energy, cause the parasite to die from starvation. As the parasites beginning to die due to a lack of required glucose for growth, they often find their way out through the fecal matter of your pets
